Character(s) In-Game: Rosalind Lutece
Character Name: Jean-Pierre PolnareffSAMPLES
Age: 22
Canon: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
World Description: For the whole series, and a link for part three in particular, where Polnareff is from.
History: Bonjour, y'all.
Death: Killed via vampire. In the final fight, Jotaro, our protagonist, is playing dead. But just to be certain he ain't faking, DIO, the series' vampiric villain, takes a giant sign-post and prepares to decapitate him. As you do. Polnareff leaps out of nowhere and throws himself forward, stabbing DIO through the brain, because unlike SOME PEOPLE he knows to aim for the head, THOR. And he hits! But it isn't enough to kill DIO, and the vampire throws him back into a wall, breaking his neck and killing him instantly.
What are your plans for this character in-game? Polnareff does not cope well with death. He fights to cling to life no matter how dire things seem, and he doesn't take well to being told the odds are against him. So he will not be happy, nor will he be thrilled with being told that this is it, there's no escape, etc! The truth will win out sooner or later, though, and when it does, I want to see how he'll cope with knowing that there's no more adventure for him, no more protecting or saving or anything like that. The man's been guided on a quest for revenge since he was eighteen or so; he's never had to deal with not having a goal like that in mind. Also, more devastatingly: he'll be miserable he can't find any of his companions.
What aspects of this game and/or its setting are you most interested in having this character engage with?
Honestly? Character development by way of connecting with others, especially in the context of "and now what". He'll also be fascinated by the Spirits, b/c like are they Stands? Maybe?? Who knows, but it'll be interesting to see.
How does your character generally get along with other people?
Oh, he loves people. Energetic, optimistic, and boisterous, Polnareff manages to endear himself to almost anyone. Or, well. Annoy them, but in a fun way, you know? He's just a guy who loves to be around others, and so he'll go to great efforts to just keep at it until someone breaks down and just likes him already. That's how friendship works, right?
What is your character's mental state upon entering the game?
Tentative relief mixed with grief! Polnareff is a man who's lost almost everyone in his life, and (though this isn't true) believes it's his fault. With his death, he at last was someone who got to sacrifice himself for others instead of vice-versa. So there'll be some guilty relief there, sure. But there'll also be a lot of grief and panic, because the battle with DIO isn't done, and he honestly isn't certain if the others can do it without him.
Skills/Abilities:
Okay, so. So. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure characters, starting in part three, have powers called Stands. I give a pretty thorough explanation here, just for application purposes, but tl;dr: Stands are extensions of a person's soul, kind of like daemons? But they're built for fighting. Silver Chariot, Polnareff's Stand, is based off a fencer, its powers based around speed and precision: it wields a rapier and can use it incredibly fast, to the point where it's almost invisible to the naked eye. A lot of the fun of Stands is that their abilities are minimal; it's how the user can think to use them that gives them an edge. Polnareff is, despite anything else, a very good warrior; he and Chariot can be a deadly duo. Note: while in canon, Stands are only visible to other Stand users, given Polnareff's died and everything's up in the air, I'd like for others to be able to see Chariot! I think it'd be a fun mechanic to explore.
Flaws/Weaknesses:
Polnareff is a good man, first and foremost, but he is an impulsive man. This can be for the better, of course, but when it's for the worse, it drastically backfires. Rarely will Polnareff think ahead or try to plan; instead, he throws himself in headfirst to whatever he wants to do. He's also got a temper, and when the two are combined, it's almost impossible to argue with him. It's a character flaw commented on again and again, and one that leads to the near-death of his friend, Abdul, twice-- the first, because he rushed in to avenge his sister's murderer without stopping to think about the situation, and the second, because he was too focused on defeating DIO to properly analyze his surroundings. He's intelligent enough, but he never bothers to stop and think.
He leads with his heart, not his head, and it gets him into trouble. Another example from canon: he comes upon a genie who grants wishes at one point (which, to be fair, isn't as far-fetched as it sounds in Jojo's, where anything can happen and logic is a nightmare). Despite the fact he's been on a journey where so many people have tried to kill him, he just assumes this is all well and good, and makes three wishes. Further: while his first was stupid and impulsive (he wants to open POLNAREFFLAND, it's like Disney but BETTER), his second two were deeply emotional. He wanted to bring his sister and his friend back to life, feeling guilty for their deaths. (It didn't end well). And speaking of his emotions: he cares deeply, but he's also clumsy, emotionally speaking. He says what he thinks and doesn't bother to consider other's feelings or read the subtleties of a conversation before blurting out his thoughts. Again, this isn't always bad, and he isn't callous, but he's loud and has a tendency to trip over his own two feet in his haste to contribute, which can be his downfall when people don't react well.
Phobias include toilets (I really wish they didn't, but here we are and here I am, having to write it), and more seriously, any situation in which an innocent woman can be injured/hurt. Also any incident in which someone is hurt or dies when he could have prevented it, he's got that sweet sweet hero complex going on. ALSO because I know this game, the ressurected corpses of his friends/sister/etc is terrifying, because he's dealt with it before! And vampires. Vampires are a big no-no.
Personality:
Polnareff's motif is that of a knight. It shows in his Stand, who wields a sword even in the late twentieth century, and it shows in his personality. Above all else, Polnareff is an honorable man. He takes the concept quite seriously, no matter what-- shown early on, when he was mind-controlled by the villain. Burning to death at the hands of one of the heroes, he's offered a knife in order to kill himself. Not only does he refuse, saying that doing so would be a disrespect to his enemy's prowess and skill, but he doesn't take the opportunity to throw the knife at his attacker's back-- because it would be underhanded and dishonorable. Do you know how hard it is to be honorable when you're burning to death? It's pretty hard. He's charming. He really is! He's not suave, not oily-like, but rather just so genuinely happy and enthusiastic it's hard not to be amused by him. He joins a group that's already bonded, the four members insular and not entirely friendly to him at first-- but instead of shying away, he simply throws himself into them, acting as though they're mates already, and soon enough desire becomes reality. He's sweet and, if not thoughtful, at least terribly kind, aiding both friends and strangers alike. He wears his heart on his sleeve, laughing loudly and crying easily. He's warm and openly affectionate, loud and enthusiastic and determined, and has a tendency to downplay awful things with his overwhelming positivity.
